R. Donar sangre es un proceso bastante seguro. La sangre de cada donante se recolecta con una aguja nueva y estéril que se usa una sola vez y luego se desecha. Además, cada donante recibe un mini examen médico antes de la donación para asegurar que se encuentra en buena condición física como para donar ese día.

Q. Is it safe to donate blood?
A. Donating blood is a safe process. Each donor’s blood is collected through a new, sterile needle that is used once and then discarded. Additionally, each donor will be given a mini-physical prior to donations to ensure they are healthy enough to donate that day.
11. P. ¿Por qué es importante que las personas latinas donen sangre?
R. Las personas latinas juegan un papel fundamental en ayudar a los pacientes que necesitan productos sanguíneos para salvar sus vidas. Uno de cada siete pacientes que ingresa a un hospital de EE.UU. necesitará productos sanguíneos. Aproximadamente el 57% de los hispanos tiene sangre del tipo O. La sangre de tipo O es la que más se transfunde, es el tipo de sangre con mayor demanda y por lo general su suministro es crítico.

La sangre que está en los estantes es la que salva vidas durante una emergencia y la que ayuda a asegurar que los pacientes que luchan contra enfermedades crónicas como el cáncer tengan la fuerza para seguir luchando.

Aproximadamente una de cada tres personas hispanas será diagnosticada con cáncer a lo largo de su vida. Muchos de estos pacientes necesitarán productos sanguíneos en su lucha contra el cáncer. Una cuarta parte del suministro de sangre de EE.UU. se utiliza para ayudar a tratar a pacientes de cáncer—más que cualquier otro tipo de enfermedad.

Q. Why is it important for Latinos to give blood?
A. Latinos play a critical role in helping patients in need of lifesaving blood products. 1 in 7 patients entering a hospital in the U.S. will need blood products. Approximately 57% of Hispanics have type O blood. Type O blood is the most transfused blood type, the one with the highest demand and is most often in critical supply.

It’s the blood on the shelves that saves lives in an emergency and helps ensure patients battling chronic illnesses like cancer have the strength to keep fighting.

Approximately 1 in 3 Hispanics will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime. Many of these patients will require blood products in the fight to beat cancer. A quarter of the U.S. blood supply is used to help treat cancer patients —more than any other disease type.
