SUMMARY:tertulia: When I Was Mexican: A Bollywood Musical
DESCRIPTION:This event features live singing and music from When I was Mexican: A Bollywood Musical\, and is a project for which Kristin Terhani received a 2026-2027 Milagro Artist Fund grant to support the musical’s development. For song composition\, she is collaborating with two additional local artists: acclaimed vocalist\, choir director\, composer\, arranger\, and dedicated music educator Lynn Mendoza-Khan and playwright\, producer\, director\, and teacher Alisha Christiansen. \nWhen I was Mexican: A Bollywood Musical tells the story of Ana\, who has a big birthday on the horizon and decides that it’s finally time to find the answer to a life-long nagging question. It’s a story of identity (and mis-identity)\, family (and found family)\, an unexpected multi-cultural sense of self\, and what it means to experience these things as an adult woman—all with the support\, encouragement\, and cajoling of Ana’s friends. \nLed by Tehrani\, Christiansen\, and Mendoza-Khan\, this tertulia features three to six songs from the musical and short bits of the script\, highlighting Ana’s journey\, one that will resonate with many who travel their own paths of cultural identities\, life surprises\, and chosen family. Mendoza-Khan will share new songs from the musical\, including work by fellow composer Balamurali Balu. \nAs an emerging writer drawn to storytelling based on her lived experiences as an ambiguously brown girl\, Tehrani is particularly interested in the stories and lived perspectives of first generation bi-racial and bi-cultural individuals and communities\, and When I was Mexican: A Bollywood Musical is based on her journey of cultural identity\, life surprises\, and chosen family. \nRunning time: 90 minutes\nAge recommendation: All ages

SUMMARY:enfoque: Building Community Through Shared Leadership with Latinx Choral Project
DESCRIPTION:Join the Latinx Choral Project for a conversation exploring how community arts organizations can move beyond traditional hierarchical structures and embrace leadership models rooted in shared responsibility\, belonging\, and collective care. Inspired by Latine cultural traditions of mutual aid and community stewardship\, the Latinx Choral Project is developing a values-based organizational framework centered on Casitas—small leadership circles that guide key areas such as membership\, communications\, outreach\, operations\, fundraising\, and artistic vision. What happens when community members become co-creators rather than passive participants? How can organizations cultivate leadership at every level? What structures support both artistic excellence and authentic community engagement? Through dialogue\, storytelling\, and reflection\, attendees will explore questions about power\, participation\, and decision-making\, and imagine new possibilities for building arts organizations that are more inclusive\, sustainable\, and responsive to the communities they serve. \nBased in Portland\, the Latinx Choral Project is a Latine-led community choir dedicated to building belonging through song. Founded by Lynn Mendoza-Khan\, who received a 2026-2027 Milagro Artist Fund grant to support essential program costs for he group\, so that the organization can continue to share the rich musical traditions\, cultures\, and stories of Latin America while creating meaningful connections across generations and communities. Through performances\, educational programs\, and collaborative artistic experiences\, the Latinx Choral Project amplifies underrepresented voices and increases access to choral music. Singers of all backgrounds are welcome to participate in a joyful\, inclusive environment where cultural pride\, artistic excellence\, and community care come together to inspire\, heal\, and unite. \nRunning time: 2 hours\nAge recommendation: All ages

SUMMARY:tertulia: Discoteka Magazine Launch Party with Barrio Girlz
DESCRIPTION:Join Barrio Girlz at a launch party for Discoteka Magazine\, a self-published periodical uplifting contributions of queer women of color who are creating spaces where self expression feels safe\, accessible\, and welcoming within the underground music industry. This event is a showcase for the magazine\, which will be available for purchase and viewing for the first time. Guests will mingle and connect\, dance to music played by local Latina DJs\, and enjoy a showcase of works by local Latinx photographers\, designers and creatives. \nThis event is the result of a project by the Portland-based multi-media artist\, graphic designer\, and illustrator Aline Chercover (aka Barrio Girlz)\, who received a 2026-2027 Milagro Artist Fund grant to support printing of her magazine. Chercover’s work—driven by culture and centered on identity and femininity—aims to document and uplift voices often overlooked\, while building spaces where representation feels unapologetic and real. Their practice spans illustration\, editorial design\, and self-directed publishing\, including the independently produced magazine and years of work released under their Barrio Girlz brand. \nRunning time: 3 hours\nAge recommendation: 18+

SUMMARY:Community Harvest Mondays
DESCRIPTION:Community Harvest Mondays is a weekly volunteer gathering rooted in stewardship\, shared labor\, and food access. Each Monday\, community members join us in the field to support seasonal maintenance and harvest fresh produce for local food distribution. \nVolunteers participate in hands-on agricultural work\, planting\, weeding\, harvesting\, washing\, and packing\, while learning how food moves from soil to community. A portion of each harvest supports local food access efforts\, helping ensure fresh\, culturally relevant produce reaches families in our area. Volunteers are also invited to take home a share of the harvest as appreciation for their time and contribution. \nThis is an opportunity to build practical skills\, connect with the land\, and take part in a consistent\, meaningful effort to grow and share food with dignity and care. \nNo prior experience is necessary. All are welcome.
